Description:
This study is a randomized, multi-center clinical trial designed to determine optimal treatment for individuals with intermittent claudication from peripheral arterial disease (PAD). This study is the only study of its kind to compare medical therapy, supervised exercise training and invasive catheterization/stent revascularization procedures
Eligibility:
- Individuals must be 50 years of age or older and experiencing symptoms suggestive of intermittent claudication such as: exercise induced pain, cramping, fatigue or discomfort involving the large muscle groups of the legs (calf, thigh, buttock) that is relieved by rest.

Exclusions:
- Poorly controlled hypertension
- Poorly controlled diabetes
- Individuals with leg pain at rest, leg ulcerations or gangrene
- Inability or unwillingness to do walking exercise
- Severe coronary artery disease or other significant medical problems such as chronic renal disease, chronic liver disease, active cancer, substance abuse
- Inability or unwillingness to have catheterization/stent procedures
