This study is designed to compare the study medication (pioglitazone) vs. a placebo for prevention of stroke and myocardial infarction (heart attack) in individuals who have recently had either an ischemic stroke or a transient ischemic attack.
 
 
 
Neurology
Neurology is the study of the function and disorders of the nervous system. Physicians specializing in the field of neurology are called neurologists and are trained to diagnose, treat, and manage patients with neurological disorders.

These disorders are wide and varied but include:

Headache disorders such as migraine, cluster headache and tension headache

Epilepsy and seizure disorders

Neurodegenerative disorders: Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Lou Gehrig's disease and ataxia.

Cerebrovascular disease: Stroke and transient ischemic attacks (TIA)

Sleep disorders

Demyelinating diseases: Such as multiple sclerosis

Disorders of peripheral nerves: such as Guillain-Barre syndrome.

Research in the field of neurology studies a variety of treatments for these disorders.

SAMMPRIS
Study Timeline: Closed to enrollment
The SAMMPRIS trial is being done to determine whether intracranial stenting (a device inserted in a blood vessel in the brain) combined with intensive medical therapy is better than intensive medical therapy alone for preventing stroke or death in individuals who have had a stroke or TIA (mini stroke) caused by a narrowing in one of the arteries in the brain.
